Ski & Sail - Svalbard
Endless lonely ski mountains, huge endless glaciers ending in the sea. Polar bears and sea lions on Spitsbergen.
Via Oslo we reach Longyearbyen, the northernmost settlement on earth, only 1200 km away from the North Pool. About 2500 people live in Longyearbyen. Coal mining is still important today, but most of the inhabitants work in the various polar research centers or live from tourism. The town center is very manageable, but still has a few pubs, small stores and a few hotels. After our arrival we move into our sailboat. Our captain and team provide us with the most important information and rules on the boat as well as wonderful food.
Soon after we release the lines and off we go on a unique adventure. We have to do without darkness completely this week, because the sun turns in a 360 degree circle, 24 hours in the sky. The next day, after breakfast we go on a ski tour, passing mighty mountains and glaciers. Depending on the weather and conditions we decide the next 6 days which peaks will be our goals. On Spitsbergen you could go ski touring for a lifetime without climbing a peak twice. With good wind and weather we will also try to ski Prince Karl Forland Island and up to NyAlesund. After a long day out in the rough mountains we are happy to return to the well heated sailboat, enjoy a delicious meal and let the impressions sink in with a glass of wine. On the last day we leave our meanwhile very familiar sailboat and, depending on the flight schedule, spend another night in Longyearbyen and experience the hustle and bustle of the city. A unique and unforgettable experience!
