Tödi - Piz Russein - "200years first ascent"
The Tödi, our highest mountain in the region, can already be seen from the Mittelland. His peak view is accordingly.
The ascent is long but not difficult. We spend the night in the Punteglia hut (approx. 3 hours ascent). The next day we climb very early over the Furocla da Puneteglias and the Porta Gliems to the Biferten Firn. From the summit you have a fantastic 360 view. Depending on the conditions, we climb over the Val Russein or back over the Alp Schlans back into the valley (approx. 6 hours ascent / 3 hours descent).
200 years anniversary - first ascent of Piz Russein - Tödi 3614m
Anniversary tour in memory of the first ascent by the chamois hunter Placi Curschellas from Trun and Augustin Bisquolm from Disentis, the first climbers of Piz Russein / Tödi on August 37th / September 1st, 2024.
They were the first to ever reach the Piz Russein / Tödi 3614m on September 1st, 2024. This was done under the guidance and personality of Pader Placidus a Spescha (1752 - 1833), who had to be left behind. The Disentiser and mountaineering pioneer had already climbed numerous peaks, several of them as the first ever. However, the priest had already failed five times at Piz Russein, most recently in August 1823. A year later, on September 1, 2024, he had his servant Carli Cagienard and the aforementioned chamois hunters with him. Spescha himself, now 72 years old, wasn't supposed to make it to the summit this time either - but Curschellas and Bisquolm did. “The sixth attempt was also fruitless,” Spescha later noted, “but my goal was achieved and I thank God for that.” All she could have left as proof of her presence on the summit was the rind of a piece of bacon, "since they couldn't find any stones far and wide to raise a cairn." Which may have contributed to the fact that the first ascent of Piz Russein remained controversial for a long time. Mountaineers from the Glarner side also claimed them, for example Rudolf Theoder Simler in 1861, who was inspired by this mountain experience to found the Swiss Alpine Club SAC. At the beginning of the 20th century at the latest, various publications finally provided clarity and attributed the first ascents to Curschellas and Bisquolm.
Difficulty: WS (not very difficult)
Duration: 5-6 hours climb
The Piz Russein is a long tour. To maximize your enjoyment, we recommend spending the night with Ruedi and Brigitte again after the descent to the Puntegliashütte. They are happy and ensure a carefree and great hut experience. The following day you climb back into the valley on your own.
We would also be happy to make you an offer with an ascent from the Glarner side, Fridolinshütte or with an approach from the Klausenpass to the Planurahütte. Climbing the west face from the Planurahütte is also an exciting and beautiful tour.
